Im 30 yr old female from Australia who is having orthodontic treatment to treat my open bite, along with surgery. I hope my blog is informative for other open bite patients as I have learnt so much already from other bloggers
Hey! I have an open bite too, I'm going to be getting jaw surgery in the future to fix this problem. I was wondering if you know what caused your open bite. I had braces in the past and my bite has continued to open as I have a tongue thrusting problem which is causing it. My past ortho didnt even realize this. Fortunately my new ortho is really great and he pointed it out right away. You problems sound very similar to mine, I've gon for sleep studies and I've also had a lot of breathing issues, headaches, jaw and neck pain.Check out my blog if you have a chance http://openbiteblog.blogspot.com
I have seen a few orthos and drs and I have never really been given a definitive answer, most just think its happened as I have grown. I was only 11 when I first got my braces and I didn't have an open bite then, but by the time I was 19 I did, so they think I was still growing and its just grown out that way. They also think the tongue thrust has contributed or is just an adverse affect from it - its like the chick or the egg analogy, which came first??? I know since I got my NTI splint 18 months ago its DEFINITELY gotten worse, I even think its worse since those photos were taken in November because I'm still using my splint every night. Some food that I use to be able to eat 6 months ago, I just can't bite into anymore, its physically impossible as my opening is quite bad. I have also been asked if I sucked my thumb, had a bottle or dummy when I was a baby and even if I was premature, so I think it all relates to just genetics and growth.
